Slime City

Slime City (1988)

Dir: Greg Lamberson (Naked Fear/Slime City Massacre)

Ah yes the little known genre of  The Splatter-Punk  film, A sub genre with films such as Toxic Avenger,Class of Nuke em' High , STreet Trash, and a handful of others. These are films that go for the over the top gore and are typically set in the inner city where every  surrounding character  is made out to be a scumbag. Slime City is no different although it makes up for it's lack of budget and blood with epic amounts of colored goo.
Alex a young aspiring painter finds a new apartment ran by two elderly ladies Lizzy and Ruby and they seem all too eager to have Alex move in. Quickly after moving in Al meets two of the other tenants, First Nicole a Goth Punk rocker chick with a constant lack of clothing, who seems to take a liking for Alex right away.Next Tenant is Roman, Another Punk Rocker and starving poet who is really set on becoming friends with young Alex. After Al gets settled in Roman invites Al over for dinner and when he arrives, The meal consists of a strange slime called Himalayan Yogurt and a special wine that was made by the buildings former owner Zachary. After the meal Alex drunkenly wanders to Nicole's room and she seduces him. All appears to be good at Al's strange new place until later that night when he wakes up covered in slime dripping from all his pores.

Alex concerned about this new condition heads out to a pharmacy for medicine and along his way the Slime begins to worsen and while on his way home he gets violently ill. As Alex is vomiting in a alleyway near a homeless man , Al appears to be possessed as he murders the transient with a steel pipe. After the bloodshed Alex appears to have been cured of his ailment for the moment. Upon returning home Alex starts having urges for the Yogurt after Roman shows up to bring him leftovers from the last night. Al asks more about the strange yogurt and if it causes Hallucinations, Roman tells Al that it does and that is why the tenants of the building love it so much.

Alex begins learning more about the history of the building and the strange yogurt and elixir. Turns out that it was made by Zachary a alchemist cult leader that used to own the building and he used the yogurt and wine as a form of mind control. Despite this Al continues to eat the strange concoction and the slime begins to take over. One night while meeting his girlfriend Lori's parents Alex seems to be having a sudden change of heart about their relationship and decides it is not wise for her to move in with him, as the conversation gets heavy,Al begins to ooze the slime again and he dismisses himself from the dinner meeting. Along his way home Alex begins to melt bad and he covers himself in bandages before picking up a local prostitute. Once they arrive at his place Alex carves her up.

The following day Lori goes to Alex's apartment while he is not home and does some snooping around. Alex catches her in the act just as she finds a woman's shoe in his closet. this leads to a argument and Alex and Lori call it off. Alex begins to go looking for more answers as to what is happening to him and Nicole provides some answers. Apparently the tenants of the building are actually possessed by the souls of the cult members that killed themselves in the building years before, Then Lizzy who turns out to be the actual daughter of Zachary tells  Alex he  has been chosen to become their leader Zachary. Alex decides he does not want to go along with this plan but his urges for the elixir are too strong. Soon suspicion begins to surround Alex in the case of the missing hooker as a detective and friend of the hooker starts questioning him. While Alex continues to further slip into the Zachary role, Distancing himself from all friends and family.

Alex now hits a even more violent streak as a group of thugs attempt to mug him, when he is stabbed in the gut his stomach grows teeth and bites the assailants arm off. then  Al kills his best friend. Alex tries his hardest to control the urges for the elixir and patch things up with Lori, But Zachary has other plans for Alex. Lori arrives at Alex's for dinner one night when the slim takes over and Alex attempts to kill Lori. This leads to a interesting final fight and attempt at a gross out finale as Alex is chopped to several pieces as his body seems to just not wanna give up. After the big fight scene, Det.Irish arrives on the scene and after gathering information , decides he likes the apartment and asks to rent it , leaving a opening for a sequel.

For fans of films like Street Trash and several older Troma films , this should be right up your alley. However I personally feel Street Trash is a far superior Splatter-Punk film. This is a fun little film though and it has it's moments. It does get a bit slow and redundant at points but the story and characters are so over the top and goofy you can't help but enjoy this cheese fest. The effects are not the worst considering the budget but at times they are just ridiculous, Like when Alex is gutted and his entrails are clearly sausage and scrambled eggs. I noted that the end left room for a sequel and oddly enough while looking for the poster art for this film I found that there is in fact a sequel entitled Slime City massacre which was made in 2010, I will definitely be checking it out as all the original film makers are involved and from what I saw in the trailer they have upped the gore and some of the effects look pretty good. I miss films like this being made and hopefully the sequel puts a new twist on a long dead genre of film. Worth a watch if you are into goofy splatter but this is not for strictly horror fans as they will probably be disappointed with this flick.
